PIPS was established
in 2003 following a cluster
of suicides in the North Belfast
area. Jo Murphy, who at
that time worked as a health
and social wellbeing development
officer in the North Belfast
area, had requested that the
issue of suicide be put on the
forum’s agenda as a matter that
urgently needed to be addressed.
Several months after this,
she read an article in the paper
from the father of a young man
who had taken his own life at
17 years of age – this father
was Philip McTaggart. Philip
had lost his young son through
suicide and had realized that
there wasn’t any type of help
or support available, for either
those in crisis or families
bereaved through suicide. He
had a letter published in the
local paper asking anyone who
was suffering a crisis or feeling
suicidal, especially young people,
to please talk to someone and
try to get some help. On
reading his letter, Jo Murphy
made contact with him and their
partnership was established.
Jo & Philip worked
to establish an organisation
that would go some way to try
and fill the gap in services
for both those in crisis and
bereaved families.
Jo’s work
involves working closely with
both those in crisis and those
bereaved through suicide. She
spends a huge amount of time
promoting awareness and education
around the issues of suicide
and self-harm as well as facilitating
the ASIST training. She
strongly believes in partnership
and inter-agency working and
her unique way of working and
establishing relationships,
with those from all sectors,
ensures the success of PIPS.
She has a vision for PIPS
and spends time managing the
strategic development of PIPS
in order to see this vision
achieved.
Jo has worked
within the community sector
for more than 20+ years. 2007
saw her winning the Belfast
Telegraph awards for both Inspirational
Woman of the Year and overall
Woman of the year. Her work
was also acknowledged by the
Community Foundation in an award
for an individual’s contribution
to her local community, displaying
leadership.
